Definition of pollution is simple but very few like to grasp it

It is quite normal to read a definition of pollution. But the impacts of pollution are very fatal. The process that hits the environment actually causes pollution. It is the end result of our every activity that harms our natural environment. It may be our carelessness to put garbage into the dustbin.

It may be irresponsibility of someone to avoid maintaining his car that emits more smoke. It may be negligence of a factory to follow green law and release effluent without treatment.

Definition of pollution hints at our negligence

It means definition of pollution actually describe all the actions that hit environment. There are several disgusting examples of actions that ultimately hurt our natural environment. For example:

  • Flow of untreated wastewater into water bodies
  • Mixing of poisonous or harmful gases into the air
  • Absorption of hazardous waste into the soil
  • Unrestrained spray of fertilizer on crops
  • Poor condition of vehicle that emits smoke more
  • Huge noise as a result of construction work
  • No care in handling hazardous waste

Understand problem first

Well, we wrongly assume definition of pollution is not as much important as its remedial measures are. We assume solution of pollution is more important to save human life from its hazards. It is a wrong approach. First we must understand the problem. After that we can go for its solution. So we must be clear what pollution is.

Solution means dilution

The end result of an action that disturbs any type of environment is called pollution. It may be natural or physical environment. Natural environment means water, soil, land, mountains, rivers, sea, lakes, waterfalls, valleys etc. Physical environment means roads, bridges, dams, buildings, highways, and other man-made constructions.

definition of pollutionSo we must know how pollution is created. Then we can stop the process that harms our environment. We cannot straightaway stop any process that harms environment. We can simply make it least harmful to our natural resources. We cannot stop running industries. But we can release effluent of industries after its proper treatment. With the process of treatment harmful chemicals of effluent are minimized as much as possible. After that it will not hit water environment as lethally as it previously could have done.

Direct look at pollution

We can directly observe the definition of pollution at a place either at land or water which has been impaired by an act of polluting. We can see pollution at:

  • A densely populated commercial hub of backward metropolis
  • A village at the coastal belt of Asia or Africa
  • An agriculture land damaged by undue spray of chemical fertilizer and pesticide
  • A cluster of factories not following green laws

Pollution-poverty nexus

In slums of huge city the harms of pollution are visible in its standard of living. We can observe their standard of living by casting a look at their:

  • Squalid streets
  • Unhygienic food
  • Smelly restaurants
  • Footpaths with heaps of garbage
  • Dirty urchins

All the above objects are enough to tell the fortune of people who lives in underdeveloped areas. It shows the nexus of pollution and poverty. More pollution means higher poverty level. It is proved in poverty-ridden areas of the world.

How we know harms of pollution?

In the process of pollution it does not evince what is affected most. But effects of all kinds of pollution are equally harmful. Either it is air pollution, water pollution or land pollution. They directly impact the human life apart from marring the natural beauty of environment.

We breathe in air but can not feel the level of pollution in it. It dawn upon us when after sometime we face problems in breathing. We don’t know how land pollution is contaminating the food we eat. We awake when it becomes hard to digest even softer kind of food. Eventually we come to know that our digestive system has totally been disturbed.

We must act together

So definition of pollution is so simple to understand. It is equally easy to feel. If we don’t have clean air to breathe it means air is polluted. If we don’t have clean water to drink we manage our living with polluted water. People with uncontaminated food have no choice but to consume it for their physical survival. It means there is not prompt solution for pollution.

First we have to stop an act of polluting. After that we should go for remedial measures to improve our already polluted environment. This we can’t do individually. All have to play their role. Here all does not mean you and me. It means all people, institutions, governments, communities and groups. We all must act together to first understand pollution and then act to combat it.

Conclusion

Therefore, definition of pollution is undoubtedly important to understand how pollution is created. Simultaneously more important is to understand the harms of pollution. We must examine how pollution is directly or indirectly affecting the natural fabric of our lives. So we can act to take precautionary measures to protect ourselves from its harms. Eventually we need to take efforts to contain it to the lowest possible level.
