Aquatic biodiversity means diversity of life in water. It mainly includes animals and plants. Water environment is different from land environment. On land human beings, animals and plants can live. But human beings can’t live in water. So this is the unique feature of water that it carries two main forms of life i.e animals and plants.
Importance of aquatic biodiversity
Aquatic biodiversity directly supports every economic activity. Aquatic ecosystem means oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, canals and other water bodies. Transportation of heavy goods entirely depends upon water. Heavy material can’t be transported through land or air routes.
So the whole industrial activities depend upon aquatic ecosystem. Water is also main source of jobs. Whole sea food industry in the world relies on water. Thousands and thousands of jobs in this industry are because of water on planet Earth. So it is must to retain diversity in life in water to maintain aquatic ecosystem.
Without its balance water will not be in its normal condition in every type of big and small water bodies. More than half of the tourism of the world directly relates to aquatic biodiversity. Sailing, boating, fishing, beaching and sea food cuisines are not possible without water on Earth. Water with its normal features is almost impossible without aquatic biodiversity which means life with its full variety in water.
Threats to aquatic biodiversity
This world has more backward regions and less advance ones. In all backward regions most of the industrial waste is released directly into the water without any treatment.
This is the main threat to aquatic biodiversity. If water keeps receiving various types of harmful industrial pollutants it will fail to maintain diversity of life inside it. Aquatic system cannot stay well if industrial effluent is released into it without treatment.
Whatever we consume is made with machines. Either it is energy, food or clothing all is made with a manufacturing process.
Machines burn fuel and emit carbon. As a result amount of carbon in the air increases. It declines the air quality. The polluted air not only hits the air environment but it causes global warming. It brings on climate change which means inconsistent weather trends on planet Earth. As a result of inconsistency in weather conditions entire ecosystem gets affected. Aquatic ecosystem is no exception to it. Life in water also receives a big hit. Water stocks in glaciers melt.
The whole composition of water stock gets disturbed. As a result aquatic biodiversity declines a lot. So everyone needs to reduce carbon footprint and support life on earth. So these are the two major threats to aquatic biodiversity. We must protect our air and water environment to keep life on earth diversifying.
If variety of life shrinks it will hit ecosystem. A weaker eco system means decline in all types of resources. As a result it will be hard to live happily on this planet Earth. We must remember that we don’t have any alternate abode except planet Earth to continue our living.
