Our wants are unlimited and the means to fulfill them are limited. This is the basic rule of economics to fulfill the unlimited wants with limited resources. It offer the two basic questions to answer. These are (i) what to produce and (ii) how to produce.
It means people in this world have to produce first those things that are the basic necessities including food, shelter and clothing. After that comforts and luxuries can be produced.
The job of economics does not end here. The basic challenge economics has since the very beginning of this world is the production and its proper distribution.
Production can be done with the resources and then main issue of distribution arises. Produced wealth could be distributed to those who can pay. So the two main economic classes emerge in this world. One is haves and other one is have-nots.
What is sustainable consumption and production?
But these all points relate to economics. Our topic focuses sustainable consumption and production. It means to consume but without wasting a particle of any resource. Similarly sustainable production means to produce but without wasting any kind of already available resources.
Now after big explosion of population it is must to adopt sustainable way of living in both production and distribution side. It is not the matter of affordability. It is the matter of awareness.
If people keep wasting resources one day their successors won’t have that much enough resources as they have now. We must remember that resources of this world in total are scarce. We can reshape or re-value them but can never add one more river in this world.
Role of consumers and producers
So responsibility lies on both consumers and producers. Their each action is inter-related. If producers harm our environment while producing things so ultimately we the consumers have lesser resources and lesser safe environment to live happily and be good consumer.
If we while consuming things waste them it means they get into garbage bin and add in land pollution. So the polluted environment means lesser opportunities to produce more and production will receive a big hit.
How to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices?
It does not require a rocket science to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices. Just a little sense of responsibility is required and that’s all. If we need to drink water we must fill the glass with water as much as we can drink it.
While producing the cloths from cotton we simply have to check if the cotton is grown with organic methods to least affect the soil condition for its sustainable use in future.
It means all the people in this world have to play their due role both collectively and individually to promote sustainable consumption and production practices by improving first ourselves and then look at others.
Otherwise our resources will be depleting with the same pace and one day we would be buying the water as the most costly commodity though right now we buy it at cheap prices.
So we must think of this fact that without sustainable practices our whole process of consumption and production would hardly hit our environment and deplete our natural resources.
